THE MIGHT TOMATO

According to Dr. Edward Giovannucci of the Harvard University School fo Public Health - eating tomatoes, ketchup, tomato sauce and tomato paste-topped pizza more than two times a week can reduce the risk of prostate cancer by 21 to 43 percent.

1. The only nutrient that turned out to have significant preventative value against prostate cancer was lycopene writes Dr. Giovannucci who also found that lycopene was most efficiently absorbed into the body when accompanied by dietary fats (limpids).
2. Cooking tomatoes in oil encourages intestinal absorption and results in a two-to-three fold rise in plasma lycopene concentrations. Tomato sauce is one of the best lycopene sources.
3. Men who eat two or more servings of tomato products a week average a 35 percent reduction in prostate cancer risk.
4. The best food sources of lycopene according to the Tomato Research Council in New York City: Tomato Sauce, Spaghetti Sauce, Ketchup (5 mg); Tomato Soup, Canned Tomatoes, Tomato Juice, Vegetable Juice (3 mg); Minestrone Soup, Vegetable Soup, Pink Grapefruit ( 1 mg).

6. Lycopene is a powerful inhibitor of the growth of breast, endometrium (inner lining of the uterus) and lung cancer cells.
7. Tomatoes are good for the eyes. Lycopene, the most abundant carotenoid in the blood serum, was found to be the key antioxidant that guards against ARMD (Age-Related Macular Degeneration), a condition that may cause blindness.
8. Tomatoes are high in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Calcium and Potassium.

SPOKANE HOOPFEST

Hoopfest History:

Hoopfest was started in 1990 by two groups of people. One of these groups wanted to continue the 3-on-3 Basketball tournaments they grew up with in the Midwest. The other group wanted to raise money for the Special Olympics. When these two groups came together, they birthed what is now the largest 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament in the World.

The first Hoopfest in 1990 started with 36 courts, 512 teams, and 2009 players. Today the numbers exceed 400 courts, 6,100 teams, and 24,000 players from over 42 states and it is still growing every year!

Hoopfest is not only a great family event, it has also greatly impacted Spokane's economy and contributed to many charities over the years. In 2006 there was a study done on the spending per Hoopfest participant (including food, hotel, activities, etc). It is estimated from this survey that Hoopfest brings in 30 million dollars annually. Hoopfest has also donated $1,000,000 dollars to charities every year including the Special Olympics, YMCA, YWCA, and many others. There have also been eighteen outdoor basketball courts that have been renovated in Spokane through proceeds from Hoopfest.
